Suncor New Footwear Standard

Changes to Safety Footwear at Suncor Oil Sands begin Dec. 31, 2010!

In all work/operating areas, employees and long term contractors must be wearing Grade 1, CSA approved work boots with soles made of VibramTM, Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU), rubber or oarprene by Dec. 31, 2010.  Most employees likely already wear a boot with the approved soles but if you are in doubt contact your safety coordinator.  One type of sole that will not be approved is PU or polyurethane.  Sometimes the sole content is listed on the label located on the underside of the tongue in your work boot.

As per TAMSIL PPE requirements boots must be six inches in height and laces must be tied at all times.

Most popular brands of boots including Redwing, STC, Dakota and CAT are equipped with the approved soles.  Several stores in Fort McMurray carry the boots and at Mark's Work Wearhouse there are labels and signs that indicate which footwear is approved for use at Suncor's Main Site.

Approximately 25% of the total recordable injuries at Main Site are the result of slips, trips and falls.  Wearing the appropriate safety footwear can help prevent slips, trips or falls from happening.

In addition to the changes to the footwear standard, in upgrading, we will carry two types of Over-the-Shoe GRIPs traction footwear:

1. GRIPS Over-the-shoe All-TractionTM Footwear

2. GRIPS-LITETM All-TractionTM Footwear
