Christmas Party
Although the nasty weather kept some of our members at home, we still had a good turn out at this years Christmas party on December 5th. Kudos to Darrell Flemming with QCC for stepping up to the plate as Santa this year! As I walked around with my excited children to all the activities I realized there were several volunteers making sure that: the garbage was cleaned off the tables, the kids took their turn on the slides, all the children had decorations for their picture frames, and we were served a good meal as well as many, many other functions that needed to be monitored by a volunteer in order that the event could run smoothly. You would have also seen many of them if you were at this year's party. Next time you run into one of our members or staff that dedicated their personal time to make this event possible, please take the time to thank them. Annual General Meeting
At the Annual General Meeting, held on November 21st, approximately 150 members were in attendance to review the three year business plan and the financial status of the Local. Motions to approve the audited financial statements for 2008-09, the proposed 2010 budget and the updated business plan were all passed unanimously. A motion to apply for an extension of the field dues reduction put in place last year was also approved. In the afternoon a presentation on the implementation of the Local 146 Pride and Progress Program was made. After some healthy discussion and debate there was overall consensus that the program was necessary and for some, long overdue. If there are any questions regarding the program I encourage you to call either myself or Ward Wagner, Program Representative, to discuss them.
Family Fun Night
Members along with many excited children packed out the WEM Waterpark on November 14th. The wave pool as expected was the highlight. It was quite comical at times to watch the kids trying to stand against the crashing waves only to get bowled over by the power of the water. But it was all in good fun. I saw a few thrill seekers brave the steep screamer slides as well. Overall it seemed to be a very successful night and I look forward to seeing you all again next year when we switch to Galaxyland. 3rd Annual Show & Shine
This year’s Show and Shine was a huge success. Thank you to the organizations that donated the great raffle prizes and thank you to all participants who either came to show off their rides or came to view the show. We had Shawn Evans with 630 CHED live on location promoting the event over the radio, which also helped increase attendance.
Through raffle sales and the 50/50, we were able to raise over $2500 for Santa’s Anonymous!
We had gorgeous weather, great food and an awesome variety of cars, trucks and motorcycles to view throughout the day. We even had a few custom bicycles! We look forward to seeing everyone there again next year.
Seniors Annual Golf Tournament
It was nice to see so many of our retirees participating at this years senior’s golf tournament that took place at the Ranch Golf Course on August 6th. It was a great combination of good weather and high spirits from all the golfers that made it a fantastic day of golf. The winning putt was right off of the highlight reel on Sports Center. Wally VanLeest made a picture perfect 35 footer to take his team into the winners circle. Winning Team: Alan Petovello, Wally vanleest, John Rowe, and Dale Green. Hope to see everyone again next year
18th Annual Las Vegas Golf Tournament
The combination of switching to the Ranch Golf Club and moving the tourmament to July proved to be very popular. Registration booked up much earlier than last year so for those of you that didn't get a chance to register this year, be sure to call early next year. The morining started off brisk, but after a brief rain shower the sun came out and it was balmy the rest of the day. All participants seemed to enjoy the day immensely that wrapped up with a delicious bbq dinner. The winning team this year were Boris Fistric, Mark Fistric, Don Fisher and Joel Kelly. Through generous prize donations to our tournament we were able to raise over $5,000 towards Dogs with Wings and Juvenile Diabetes Research (click here to view pictures of the event)
As you will see from all the pictures of smiling faces at this year’s picnic (click here), everyone had a great time. The new game additions of the balloon toss and the scavenger hunt went over very well with the kids. The balloons expectedly were also used as an opportunity to cool off a few people that looked like they needed dousing, but it was all in good fun. As usual there was tons of food for everyone and we ended up with a gorgeous day despite the forecast. Thank you to all volunteers that dedicated their time and to those who attended that helped out as well by cleaning up some of the garbage at the end of the day. I find going to the Boilermakers picnic you get a strong feeling of family among everyone there. Check out all the pictures posted of this year’s picnic and be sure to tell other members that did not attend about all the fun they could have if they come next year.
